The Times Behind the Signs

YELLOWKNIFE'S NEWEST AUTHOR LAUNCHES BOOK

Building upon his popular series, Tyler Heal's Street Stories which appear in the Yellowknifer, Tyler Heal has written The Times Behind the Signs.

The 72 page book features detailed descriptions of the stories behind Yellowknife's street names and includes archival photos and maps. Each story is a fascinating portrayal of those who shaped Yellowknife. The people after whom our city's streets were named include Yellowknife's First Peoples, southern transplants, aviation pioneers and a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient.

The Times Behind the Signs details lives filled with unimaginable troubles, gruesome accidents, clever inventions, and triumphs of survival. They tell of the men and women who lived in this remote and inhospitable land and made it part of our history.

After reading The Times Behind the Signs you will not be able to walk Yellowknife's streets without thinking about the stories behind their names.

Tyler, who is only sixteen years old, is donating all of the proceeds of this book to the NWT Mining Heritage Society.

Sponsored by the City of Yellowknife Heritage Committee, The Times Behind the Signs was launched at the Yellowknife Book Cellar on November 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Thank you to the following organizations for their support (in cash and in kind): The City of Yellowknife Heritage Committee, Diavik Diamond Mines Ltd., De Beers Ltd., and the NWT Arts Council (also see our sponsors page).

All proceeds from the sales of this book will go to benefit the NWT Mining Heritage Society. They are an extremely worthy organization, so, if you have time, give them a hand, or make a donation; I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

A history book like this about a community cannot live up to its full potential without input from the community. If you are, are related to, or knew the person/family that a street is named after, please submit a short biography on their life and contributions to Yellowknife. It would be greatly appreciated! You can submit it online here, or fax (867.873.6506)/mail (PO Box 1825; Yellowknife NT X1A 2P4) it to us.
